"David Leaf has been at the forefront of some of the most important stories in popular music. In the over the 20 years I’ve known him I’ve found him to be a great chronicler of how culture shapes our world. His love and knowledge for the music come through his storytelling every time. I’m always excited to see what he’s making next."
Academy Award winning director Morgan Neville
In the wake of the heartbreaking passing of Brian Wilson, I was asked by the Sunday Times of London to write a piece.
You can find it at this link or it’s cut and pasted in its entirety below.
HEADLINE: I gave Brian Wilson pizza and a bed. We were friends for 50 years
David Leaf set out to write a book on the Beach Boys founder. He ended up forging a lasting connection that gave him a unique insight into a musical visionary
David Leaf
Sunday June 15 2025, 12.01am BST, The Sunday Times
We first met on — of all places — a basketball court.
It was the spring of 1976. I was turning 24 and had moved to Los Angeles the previous autumn. My primary goal was quixotic: write a book about Brian Wilson, become his friend, and help him finish SMiLE, the lost Beach Boys album.
It was as insane a notion as one could imagine. But I was driven. Obsessed, even. Looking back fifty years later, I understand I wasn’t just chasing a dream. I was answering a calling.
The Beach Boys, clockwise from top left: Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson and Mike Love
And perhaps fate or serendipity was guiding me. Just 36 hours after arriving in LA, walking towards me in Santa Monica, on the 5th Street sidewalk just north of Broadway, was Dennis Wilson. The real Beach Boy. The inspiration for the group. Brian’s brother.
Never shy, I walked up to him and I introduced myself. “Hi, Dennis. My name is David Leaf, and I just moved to California to write a book about your brother Brian.”
I can still hear his laughter as he shook his head in disbelief and walked into a low brick building which I later learned was Brother Studio, the Beach Boys’ creative home.
Half a year later, I met Brian. One day, at the local YMCA, I was shooting hoops with a college friend when two men approached us and one of them asked, “Wanna play two-on-two?” That was the towering 6ft 9in Stan Love, who had just retired from the NBA. Future father of the NBA superstar Kevin Love. Brother of the Beach Boys lead singer and co-founder, Mike Love.
With him was Brian Wilson.
As we played — and for the record, Brian played no defence at all — the whole time I kept thinking, “Are my friends back in New York going to believe this?” I barely believed it myself.
In 1976 and 1977, I had two more face-to-face encounters with Brian, but it wasn’t until I began writing The Beach Boys and the California Myth that I got a genuine glimpse of what his life was really like.
Two of his best friends — guardian angels — believed in the sincerity of what I was writing and thought I should get to know him. Not for an interview, just to spend time with him. They invited me to their apartment for dinner, where I met the real Brian Wilson: a deeply gentle, seemingly defeated soul. As he had so eloquently and beautifully expressed in one of the songs that inspired my mission: ’Til I Die.
Months later, after I had finished the book but before publication, I saw Brian again. Melody Maker’s West Coast correspondent, Harvey Kubernik, had rescued Brian as he wandered dangerously in the middle of a busy Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. Brian admitted to taking too many downers
Harvey and the radio DJ Rodney Bingenheimer then drove Brian to what they were certain was safe harbour: my apartment.
It was well after midnight when there was a knock on my door. I opened it, shocked to see the threesome. The LA scenesters left, Brian came in and asked if I had anything to eat. There were two leftover slices of pizza. After a quick reheating in the toaster oven, he wolfed them down. Then he went to sleep on the living room couch. Around 4am he woke up and asked for a ride home.
And so began my friendship with Brian Wilson.
In time, I became part of Brian’s small inner circle. After what he described as “nine years in prison”, fighting mental illness and the effects of his drug-taking, he finally re-entered the world with Melinda Ledbetter by his side. My late wife and I would often join them for dinner — two couples walking toward the restaurant. Brian and Melinda were hand in hand, like teenagers in love.
On 6 February 1995, Brian and Melinda were married at the Wayfarers Chapel, designed by Lloyd Wright, on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. I stood as an usher, just to the left of the altar beside his brother Carl, who served as best man. Through the chapel’s glass walls, you could almost hear the waves crashing below as they said “I do”. Their first kiss as husband and wife was as tender and melodic as one of Brian’s most cherished ballads.
Later, at the Hotel Bel-Air, their first dance lit up the room. With unexpected Jackie Gleason-like flair, Brian dipped Melinda to the floor as guests erupted in applause. It was a luminous evening — filled with joy, shared by those who had witnessed the storms of his life.
Throughout the rollercoaster ride of his life, I became somebody Brian could rely upon. He trusted me. Perhaps most significantly, I made him laugh. And laughter meant everything to him.
We’d go to the movies. He really loved going out to dinner, singing along with the radio on the drive back and forth. What he called “casual singing”.
In private, I helped free him from the defrocked psychologist who had taken over his life. In public, I’ve probably written more words about Brian and his artistry than anybody else. I was perhaps his most ardent advocate. I even made a film about his greatest challenge, finishing SMiLE.
Fittingly, the film had its emotional climax at the Royal Festival Hall. After his first Pet Sounds shows in 2002, the RFH had become Brian’s home away from home. So it was no coincidence that it was the venue where he debuted Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE. And earned himself the longest standing ovations of his career.
No audience had been waiting longer than British fans for that music. In 1966, UK music papers were the first to regularly recognise the genius of Brian’s work, and promote its revolutionary nature, thanks in large part to the work of the publicist Derek Taylor. Pirate radio played Good Vibrations continually.
When Brian began his solo career, London embraced him, and it became his favourite city to perform in; the UK his favourite place to tour. British Beach Boys fans had never abandoned the group. And more than anything, Brian cherished — and needed — the unconditional love of everybody in his life.
Brian was the only American rocker who crossed the ocean to perform at the Queen’s Jubilee in 2002. And, in classic Brian style, he pushed past Ozzy Osbourne to greet Her Majesty with a very American, “Hi, Queen.”
As devoted as those UK fans were, British rock royalty loved Brian Wilson in a different way, in part because they knew that what he had done musically wasn’t just Fun, Fun, Funbut was sui generis. They saw him not as a peer but as a musical prophet.
In 1990, Paul McCartney explained to me, “Nobody is educated musically ’til they’ve heard Pet Sounds.” After seeing Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE in London in 2004, McCartney told me backstage, “The man is my hero. I weep when I hear him sing. I love him.”
On Brian’s 80th birthday, Sir Elton John sent this message to him: “You’ve inspired me all my life. To me, you’re the only real pop genius in the world, and I love you very much.”
In conversation with the late Sir George Martin, the Beatles producer revealed that the band’s seminal album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band “was our attempt to equal Pet Sounds”, adding: “Brian is, to me, on a peak with John and Paul…on a par with Porter and Gershwin and Jerome Kern.”
On our side of the pond, Bob Dylan once declared, “Jesus, that ear. He should donate it to the Smithsonian.”
With all those superlatives, it would seem churlish for anybody to argue about Brian’s greatness. What remains quite unbelievable to me is that he was my friend. For nearly half a century.
Through all the ups and downs of his life, as he overcame a litany of difficulties that would have had Job willingly trading places, Brian Wilson gave us a body of music that makes him worthy of every accolade he’s received … and more.
Music was his lifeblood. As the musician Van Dyke Parks, who worked extensively with Brian, once said, “Music was his best friend, lover; it never betrayed him.”
I’ll add that food was a very close second. With laughter coming up on the outside rail.
However, what Brian Wilson loved most was just to be a regular guy. In high school, he was quarterback of the football team. Centre fielder on the baseball team. He had friends who he loved to make laugh. He double-dated. Performed at assembly.
But then, music became his obsession, as he began his mission in life: to spread God’s love through music. “Love under the disguise of a record,” as he explained in the first interview I ever did with him. “Music is the voice of God.”
And the music he composed, arranged and produced with the Beach Boys and in his most improbable, surprising second act of a solo career was worthy of the worship that he eventually came to accept, finally admitting that despite the burden of it, “a little bit of my genius” shone through on Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE. His masterpiece.
But as his friend and somebody who loves him and his music perhaps beyond reason, I can say that what we’ve truly lost is his physical presence.
His musical legacy — the shimmering melodies he composed, the ethereal harmonies he arranged for “the boys”, and all those “Good Vibrations” — is within a keystroke on our laptops or smartphones. His music will always be there to brighten our lives. And waiting for generations not yet born.
Brian Wilson is forever.
You are finally at peace, my friend. And in the end, you gave the world what you most longed for in life: harmony.

AMAZING SMiLE EVENTS: This week has seen two wonderful days where those of us who love SMiLE got together to share that magic.
The best was at UCLA on May 12, when Darian Sahanaja, Probyn Gregory, and Nelson Bragg joined me and director Denny Tedesco for a night of conversation and music. You can watch it all at this link…and if you stay until near the end, you’ll get to hear me join the band singing “Heroes and Villains.” At UCLA's Lani Hall, an SRO crowd came out to celebrate SMiLE, the music and my new book, SMiLE: The Rise, Fall & Resurrection of Brian Wilson.
For those who couldn't be there, here's the recording of the event. Don't forget to enter the passcode.

The WGAW is on strike. That means, “Pencils Down.” Since joining the Writers Guild in 1986, this is the third time I’ve been on the picket line. the strike will go at least two months or more because nothing will happen until the Screen Actors Guild either settles or joins us on the line if/when they walk out at if/when their contract negotiations break down. In the meantime, at least the weather is cooperating. May Gray and June Gloom over at Fox where I’m out there every day. Except when I’m in class at UCLA.

Hello Fellow Fans & Collectors,
My Thursday post at Facebook (and here) raised a lot of questions. So let me see if I can answer them all.
On Monday, the “book” page at www.leafprod.com, will go live with the God Only Knows VIP Experience. I’ll announce it here and at Facebook.
The “VIP Experience” is designed to be both a way to get autographed books to those who really want them as well as be a fundraiser for the UCLA Brian Wilson Scholarship fund.
What will be at my website? Simply, there is going to be a limited and numbered signed edition of God Only Knows: The Story of Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys & the California Myth. For this offering, I am signing and numbering only two hundred copies of the book. Once they’re gone, there will be no more. That’s why it’s called a limited edition. 😊
Of the two hundred books that I sign, there will be only thirty books that Brian has also signed. Only 30. Those will be priced higher than the books with my signature alone. Please order only one. And let your collector friends know.
There will also be an additional thirty numbered and signed (just by me) books that will come with special signed piece from Brian. Those will also be at a premium. Again, please only order one.
The next three tiers at the website page include the signed (just by me) and numbered book and other collectibles.
Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, I won’t be doing a book tour. If we do have bookstore signings in Southern California later this month or in October, you will find details right here.
In advance, thank you for your support.
David

GOD ONLY KNOWS: THE STORY OF BRIAN WILSON, THE BEACH BOYS AND THE CALIFORNIA MYTH TO BE RELEASED SEPTEMBER 22ND FROM OMNIBUS PRESS.
UPDATED CLASSIC BIOGRAPHY BY PEABODY AWARD-WINNING WRITER DAVID LEAF INCLUDES EXCLUSIVE CONTRIBUTIONS FROM SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY, SIR BARRY GIBB, JIMMY WEBB, MELINDA WILSON AND OTHERS.
“For over thirty years I’ve trusted David Leaf with my music and my story. The 2001 Radio City tribute to me was a highlight of my career. And his SMiLE film ‘Beautiful Dreamer’ was one of the reasons I was able to finally finish the record. He’s a true friend.” Brian Wilson
Los Angeles, CA – August 24, 2022 - A brand new and extensively updated edition of the classic rock biography God Only Knows: The Story of Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys and the California Myth by David Leaf is published by Omnibus Press and will be released on September 22nd .
Pre-order the book here: https://amzn.to/3dgPN1v
Originally published in 1978 and updated in 1985, The Beach Boys and the California Myth by David Leaf was the first book to focus on Brian Wilson and recognize him as one of the most significant and influential artists of the 20th century. An intimate look at Brian’s rollercoaster life and career, the book was told through the eyes of those who were present at Wilson’s most legendary productions including Pet Sounds, Good Vibrations and SMiLE. It covered turbulent family strife and internal conflicts as well as Brian’s remarkable music. The book became an instant classic.
Omnibus Press regards the original edition of the book as historically important and it is essentially unchanged in this new edition. Leaf has written two major new pieces that bookend his original opus, so in this edition readers are basically getting ‘two books in one’. Included in the section that precedes the original work are exclusive contributions from Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Barry Gibb, an introduction from Jimmy Webb, notes from Melinda Wilson, the previously untold stories of Leaf’s first meetings with The Beach Boys, and much more.
Leaf explains, “When I wrote the original I was twenty five and an intense, driven journalist on a mission to uncover the truth about Brian Wilson’s life. In the wake of the publication of the 1978 edition I became Brian’s friend and occasionally his partner on landmark projects. Now as an “elder statesman” in Brian’s life and story, this reminiscence is a celebration of Brian’s 80th birthday.”
He continues, “What makes this book unique is that it’s the only one written by somebody who began writing about Brian as an ‘outsider’ and who is now an ‘insider.’ Alongside Brian during his creative rebirth, I experienced so many key moments in his solo career - some of which I wrote and produced - including 2001’s All Star Tribute To Brian Wilson and my 2004 film, Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of SMiLE. This update is filled with eyewitness recollections from so many unforgettable events, including the day when Brian was the only American rock legend to play at the Queen’s Jubilee in London. In telling these stories, my wish is to provide a wealth of information that will give the reader unexpected and invaluable insights into the man behind the myth.”
The eight new chapters in this wide ranging update feature a gallery of 40+ photographs, including some previously unseen, candid behind-the-scenes looks at Brian’s creative renaissance (with ‘inside’ information about the making of his first acclaimed solo album), on the scene reportage from Wilson’s return to live performing, the incredible Pet Sounds tours, and the triumphant Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE world premiere in London. God Only Knows is filled with stunning revelations on Wilson’s life and artistry, and Leaf’s adventures with Brian offer the reader insight and perspective only the author can provide.

While working on the book, I created a series of playlists that, depending upon my mood, worked for that day’s writing.
I could easily create a list with another 100 songs (and there are a dozen albums that I played in their entirety too), as I looked back on what I had written in 1978…and what I had lived through as my fandom turned into friendship and even collaboration. What a journey. The music made it all worthwhile.

GET BACK! This was an amazing experience. Just days before Peter Jackson’s mega documentary series, Get Back, premiered on Disney +, I had a chance to Zoom with the legendary director. We recorded an interview for my UCLA course, “The Reel Beatles.” He’s obviously brilliant, a massive Beatles fan and we even spoke for a minute about You Can’t Do That my first music documentary. Towards the end of our conversation, he brought up one of my best films, The U.S. vs. John Lennon. He said that he wished “The U.S.” had won that battle, meaning no green card for John…and no fatal night in 1980.
The folks at Disney really know how to do these press things.
I was in a “Zoom waiting room,” then transferred to the holding place
And then, there he was, from way across the ocean…
Man, does he talk fast, and give you a lot of information in a minute.
He asked me about my A Hard Day’s Night doc. Pretty cool that he knew I’d done it. We even discussed rights issues between Shenson and the Beatles regarding A Hard Day’s Night and Help.
But I was there to talk Get Back, and the fact that I was “Professor David Leaf” of UCLA’s “The Reel Beatles” gave the conversation a different tone from so many other promotional interviews he was doing. No promoting necessary. No explaining what Let It Be was.
I told him that by the time my students see Get Back, they’ll have seen The Beatles First Visit, A Hard Days Night, Help, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, Let It Be, The Beatles Anthology, Eight Days A Week, all of their key TV appearances and lots of other Beatles related documentaries.
He was just so engaged. We were supposed to only speak for 20 minutes, but we went much longer. He answered all of my questions. Now that I’ve seen Get Back, I can’t wait to talk with him again. Which Mr. Jackson may do when my “Reel Beatles” class at UCLA starts again in March.
